【美術館】米ホイットニー美術館、2015年春リニューアルオープンへ

アメリカ近現代美術の分野において世界を代表するホイットニー美術館が2015年5月1日のリニューアルオープンを発表した。同館は1931年、ガートルード・ヴァンダービルト・ホイットニーによって設立、66年にマルセル・ブロイヤー設計による建物に移転。今年10月19日に閉幕したジェフ・クーンズの回顧展で旧ホイットニー美術館としての最後を飾った。なおブロイヤー建築ではホイットニー美術館新館完成後、メトロポリタン美術館が8年にわたり展覧会を開催していく。

 

新ホイットニー美術館はマンハッタンのダウンタウンに開館。建築設計はプリツカー賞の受賞経験を持つ世界的建築家、レンゾ・ピアノ。約20,000平米、9層構造の館内には2フロアの常設展示階を含む合計約4,600平米のギャラリーが設けられ、21,000点に及ぶ収蔵品(66年時点では2,000点)の展示により適したかたちとなる。また約1,670平米に及ぶ企画展示スペースは、ニューヨークでも最大級。野外にも約1,200平米の展示スペースが設けられ、高架貨物線跡を空中緑道として再利用した「ハイライン」に隣接する。

 

同館についてレンゾ・ピアノは「この新しい建物はホイットニーとの幾年にも及ぶ対話から生まれたもの。美術館の原点を示すもの」として「ホイットニーのルーツについて語り合った。美術館での体験はアートだけでなく、ダウンタウンのコミュニティにコネクトするものだ」としている。

 

なお2015年の開館記念展は同館が誇るアメリカ近現代美術館を紹介する展覧会が予定されており、その後同年秋から16年冬にかけ、「ARCHIBALD MOTLEY: JAZZ AGE MODERNIST」や「FRANK STELLA」がラインナップされている。
